Mining The Spirt: Leigh McCloskey’s Malibu Art Show

An Unexpected Reunion, a Stunning Art Exhibit, and the Magic of Serendipity
As you can imagine, I have a pretty eclectic group of friends—some of whom you’d never expect to be connected. Case in point: Shortly after my “Hollywood Obsessed” podcast interview (Episodes 111 & 112) with actor Leigh McCloskey, who played Mitch Cooper in the 1980's prime time soap opera "Dallas," I stumbled upon an exciting realization. While researching his career, I discovered that he once starred alongside my old friend, legendary Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis, in the 1987 comedy-thriller “Dirty Laundry,” where they played an unlikely duo of roommates.
Now, Greg and I go way back—so far back that I used to house-sit his Malibu home while he and his longtime companion, Daniel McSwiney, traveled the country in their RV, taking their four dogs to agility competitions. Knowing that it had been years since Greg and Leigh had last seen each other, I had an idea. Why not reunite them—at Leigh’s very own art exhibit?
I gave Greg a call, we caught up, and when I pitched the plan, he was all in. Just like that, we set the stage for a heartwarming, unexpected reunion filled with Hollywood nostalgia, artistic inspiration, and a touch of fate.
A Surprise Reunion at the Gallery
That Sunday, we arrived at Malibu City Hall buzzing with excitement, eager to explore Leigh’s breathtaking exhibit, “Mining the Spirit,” and witness his reaction to the surprise waiting for him.
As we wandered through the gallery, admiring Leigh’s otherworldly masterpieces, I finally spotted him in a separate room, deep in conversation with a few guests. The moment he saw me, his face lit up with enthusiasm—but when I gestured toward Greg standing beside me, his expression turned to pure shock and joy.
With an exuberant shout, Leigh threw his arms in the air and rushed over to embrace Greg in a heartfelt hug. Laughter filled the gallery as the two old friends reconnected, reminiscing about their time on set, their journeys since then, and the unexpected way life had brought them together again.
After catching up, Greg and I took in more of Leigh’s stunning artwork—each piece more awe-inspiring than the last. And then came the highlight of the afternoon: Leigh took the stage for an enlightening talk and Q&A, joined by Malibu Arts Commissioner Julia Holland.
Mining the Soul: A Journey into Art, Philosophy & Imagination
Leigh’s exhibit, “Mining the Soul,” is an extension of his private library in Malibu, which he calls “The Hieroglyphics of the Human Soul.” But his work isn’t just about painting—it’s about exploring ideas, emotions, and the deeper layers of human experience.
During his talk, Leigh’s enthusiasm and passion lit up the room. He spoke about how his artwork is meant to take people on their own journey of self-discovery, much like the famous psychologist Carl Jung did with his “Red Book.”
For Leigh, art isn’t just about putting paint on a canvas—it’s about asking questions, finding meaning, and expressing creativity in a way that inspires others. His paintings feel like windows into different worlds, blending his love for storytelling, philosophy, and spirituality—all shaped by his years as both an actor and an artist.
It’s amazing to think that the same actor we watched on “Dallas” decades ago has been creating such a powerful and thought-provoking body of work. Seeing it in person, with old friends by my side, made it even more special.
An Afternoon of Art, Friendship & Inspiration
As the event wrapped up, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for such a beautiful and unexpected day—one filled with great company, new insights, and a deep appreciation for Leigh’s incredible talent.
If you want to see his work for yourself, check out his website or YouTube channel—trust me, you’ll be amazed.
Who knew that the Hollywood star we grew up watching had this whole other side to him? I’m so impressed. And I’m lucky to call him my friend.
I told you I have an eclectic group of friends! 😊
